Scalp Micropigmentation -SMP

What is Scalp Micropigmentation/SMP?

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure designed to simulate the appearance of hair follicles on the scalp. It is often used as a solution for individuals experiencing hair loss, baldness, or thinning hair. SMP is considered a form of cosmetic tattooing or permanent makeup, but instead of creating designs or enhancing facial features, it is used to replicate the look of a closely shaved head or a denser hairline.

How is it done?

During a Scalp Micropigmentation procedure, a skilled practitioner uses specialized pigments and a micro-needle to implant tiny dots of pigment into the upper layers of the scalp. These dots create the illusion of hair follicles, giving the appearance of a fuller head of hair or a well-defined hairline. The pigments used in SMP are usually matched to the individual's natural hair color to achieve a realistic and natural look.

Who is a good candidate for this service?

SMP can be used for various purposes, including:

  1. Hairline Reconstruction: SMP can create a natural-looking hairline for individuals with receding hairlines or those who want a more defined hairline.

  2. Camouflaging Baldness: SMP can help reduce the appearance of bald spots or thinning areas on the scalp, giving the impression of greater hair density.

  3. Scar Concealment: It can be used to hide scars from hair transplant surgeries or other scalp procedures.

  4. Fuller Look: SMP can create the illusion of a fuller head of hair by adding density to areas where hair is thinning.

It's important to note that SMP is not a hair restoration technique in the sense that it doesn't promote the growth of new hair. It is a cosmetic solution that focuses on creating a visual effect of hair on the scalp. The results of SMP can vary depending on the individual's natural hair color, skin tone, and the skill of the practitioner performing the procedure

How long does it last?

SMP is a non-invasive hair loss solution that can last 3-5 years.  After this time, many clients like to come in for a touch-up.

How many Scalp Micropigmentation Sessions will I need?

To achieve the best and most realistic results, we advise our clients to expect 2-4 sessions.  In each session we create more density.  The client is in full control on how their look will be, from the density to the hairline.  It can be a softer look or more full look.

How long between each session?

Each additional session can be done between 10-14 days

Does Getting a Hair Tattoo Hurt?

Pain tolerance differs from client to client.  Most clients find it tolerable and say "it's not as bad as they thought it would be".

How do I prepare for my procedure?

Remove dead skin cells by exfoliating your scalp the night prior to your procedure.  Start to moisturize 3-4 days prior to your treatment. Your scalp needs to be soft, so lather on that moisturizer, this will ensure your scalp is hydrated and will allow the pigment to be absorbed properly.  If you have oily skin then do not moisturize.  Get a goods night sleep and be well hydrated.  This is not like a regular tattoo where they go deep into the skin.  SMP goes just under the surface of the skin.  If the skin is hard, the needle will bounce off the scalp and not implement the pigment.

Should I cut my hair prior to my procedure?

Yes, use a clipper or a foil razor.  If you are used to shaving your scalp, be careful not to nick it.  Do it the night prior, not the day of your appointment.  If you do it the day of, your follicles may still be a bit open and may cause more redness and soreness.  It's all about the preparation :).

Day of Procedure:

We want you to be as comfortable as possible.  Be sure to eat before you arrive to your procedure.  You may bring headphones if you choose.  Wear comfortable clothes.  Depending on how much surface we are covering, your appointment can last anywhere from 2.5 - 4 hours.

What to avoid?

Stay away from pools, saunas, steam rooms, exercising or anything that causes excessive sweating.  We recommend 4 days.  You may continue to exercise if you can refrain from sweating.

No Alcohol, energy drinks, caffeine, or tea 24 hours before your appointment.  These are considered blood thinner.

Avoid medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen.  Feel free to contact us with any questions regarding certain medications.

What should I do after my SMP session?

1. Do not shampoo for the first 4 days.  We will provide you with the proper products to use and take care of your scalp.  On the 5th day, you may resume gently washing your hair and  use baby shampoo until your next touch up.

2. You can resume shaving your head on day 5.

3. You can wear a hat, but we recommend one that it does not rub on the SMP area.

4. Avoid swimming for 30 days

5. No tanning for 2 weeks after.  You must give your skin the time to fully heal.

6. Avoid scratching the area to prevent infections.

7. Avoid any kind of activities that promote sweating for 7 days.  This will allow your scalp to fully heal so you can enjoy the best results.

How long does SMP take to heal?

There is little to no downtime.  Most clients go to work on the same day.  There may be some redness for 1-2 days. This is totally normal and should not be a cause for alarm.  Most people say it feels like a sunburn. This is the body's way of healing.  It usually takes 10-14 days for the scalp to fully heal.
